Bloggers 2017-2018

Welcome to our student bloggers of 2017-2018!

Stephen Cleary

Stephen Cleary

Hi, my name is Stephen and I am in my second year of studying a Geography BA at Royal Holloway. I am currently planning my dissertation which will explore the relationship between pedestrians and out-of-home advertisements in the London Underground. This research will be conducted alongside working with a London-based marketing strategy company called Truth.

I am excited to be working with the organisation because it will give me industry experience and will help me to carry across the skills I have learnt from my degree into the ‘real world’ of work. I hope to meet new people who share similar interests to me. I would like to learn from the people I work with. I will be documenting my experiences on this blog!

Courtney Farrow

Courtney Farrow

My name is Courtney and I will be working with the Responsible Safari Company in Blantyre, Malawi. During my stay I will be visiting tea plantations investigating the impacts and processes of Fair Trade and whether the criteria for what makes a product ‘Fair Trade’ matches up to what happens during the production of Fair Trade Tea.

Rebecca Goldsworthy

Hi, my name is Becca and I will be doing the placement based dissertation with StreetInvest this summer. It is a fantastic opportunity that I am so grateful to be part of. I will be undertaking research to investigate the primary causes of homelessness in young people across the UK. I will be looking at family complexity, how experiences on the street compare to being at ‘home’ and the usefulness and availability of support services that are available to young people. I think that these are key issues that need to be addressed I am so excited to get started!

Beth Sadler

Beth Sadler

My name is Beth Sadler and am studying for a BA in Geography. I will be conducting a placement linked dissertation with Guildford Cathedral. I am researching the relationship between the ‘mother church’ Guildford Cathedral and local parishes within the diocese of Guildford. I will be looking at factors which have influence on a churches relationship to the Cathedral and whether this relationship has changed over time. I am looking forward to learning more about the complex work and relationships of the heritage lottery funded cathedral through my research.

Phoebe Hughes

Phoebe Hughes

My name is Phoebe Hughes and I will be undertaking my placement-linked dissertation with StreetInvest. Using StreetInvest and my own data, my aim is to explore how and why LGBT youth experience displacement after coming out to their families.

I am excited to understand how an NGO operates both at home and abroad. Further, I wish to understand why so many young people become street orientated and what is being done to stop it.

Aleksander Pietraszewski

Aleksander

I am Aleks, and I am an undergraduate geographer at Royal Holloway University of London.

I will be undertaking a placement with Truth, a marketing strategy consultancy which lies at the intersection of culture and commerce.

Working with Truth will enable me to pursue my interest in culture and how it can be utilised to in order to market products more effectively, as well as gaining invaluable experience in the industry for the future.

My dissertation will focus around how a place (Priorat) utilises a local product (Priorat Wine) as part of a marketing strategy in reshaping itself as a tourist destination.
